~Birding in Minnesota~

There’s plenty to see in Minnesota. The land of 10,000 lakes and the U.S.-top of the Mississippi Flyway has a wealth of pristine bird habitats.

I was thrilled to get this shot of several mallards floating in sub-zero cold in Duluth’s Canal Park, and even more so to see it featured on Audubon.org showcasing birding in Minnesota. The birds were both camera and people-shy, so I had to create a remote set-up in an area that I knew the birds would come back to. The camera was fitted with a very wide angle lens, in the neighborhood of 16mm, when this image was taken, meaning that the birds were very close to the lens, and the camera was just above the lapping water. That the lighthouse is just visible in the sea-smoke was a complete bonus. Take a read through the article for some excellent advice on seeing some of Minnesota’s birding gems.
