~Heritage Values in Contemporary Society~

What do we value about the past?

I shot the cover image for Heritage Values in Contemporary Society when I was traveling in Cambodia in the early 2000s. We were atop one of the premier temples for viewing the sunset, and I was appalled by the number of tourists. It felt like we’d suddenly been transported to Disney World. In classic form, the glut of tourists watched the sun kiss the horizon, and were moving to be off the site as soon as the orange disk was barely out of site. The temple was trampled, and showing its age, largely because of the modern strain. We lingered at the top, when I saw another group lingering as well, a group of monks, their saffron robes bright orange in the waning light. I snapped a photo, and it somehow seemed to capture the blending of old world values, of the importance of heritage, in this modern tourist site. Heritage Values in Contemporary Society works to explore what those values are today, how they are embodied, and what challenges are being faced in a world that continues to evolve and change, sometimes without concern for what’s being left behind, and lost to time.
