Open this month’s Backpacker Magazine to page 18 and you’ll find a Messenger Photo of Isle Royale National Park’s famous Greenstone Ridge Trail. The photo was taken in the summer of 2016, when my wife and I hiked across the center of the island, zig-zagging all over between McCargoe Cove and Chippewa Harbor. The photo in the story was taken on a day hike around Chickenbone Lake. Backpacker’s feature is a great story about trails in public lands that might not be the same down the road, and I’m honored to have a photo in it to feature a beautiful place. Having been on several of the hikes they cover, I can definitely suggest you put a couple on your list, including the Grinnell Glacier Trail in Glacier National Park, and Haleakala’s Sliding Sands Trail, they’re worth the hard work!
