I had the chance to spend some time thinking about working in the thriller genre with THE ICE ON THE LAKE and wrote a piece for The Strand magazine. It just published earlier this week. In it, I talk about going from writing about the true terror of a bear attack in THE TWENTY-NINTH DAY, to the fictionalized horrors of being trapped on the ice with THE ICE ON THE LAKE, and the latter’s approach as a locked room thriller.
When I was 17 years old, I was mauled by a grizzly bear. I was alone, in the prime of my life, had a small sense of invincibility, and the naiveté that being a month into my 42 day whitewater canoe trip, things were about to get much easier.
I would soon be lying unconscious on the tundra, alone, sure I was about to die, and with an enormous predator surveying my still, bleeding body.
My essay in The Strand is now live at this link: A locked room thriller on crumbling ice
